On IRC or mailinglists I frequently see people not understanding the idea and concepts behind glue records. Many have no clue about it. It’s always the same, some people don’t get it and thus make their sites unavailable – when you explain it, they don’t understand.

Hence, I suggest a name change, just name them

Manueller Logon enthüllte eine 500-Antwort, dass der FTP Server down sei wegen “server removal” (???). Ein Blick auf die zugehörige Website (das Wiki) ergab Fehlermeldungen, dass die Wiki Software keine Schreibberechtigungen hätte.

Test Logon mit sftp(1): Geht. Dateien alle da, Berechtigungen passen. Upload oder chmod oder Symlinking mittels sftp (kurz: Jegliche Schreiboperation): Ein lapidares “Failure”. Erstmal ein stundenaktuelles Backup runtergeladen. Vielleicht brennt ja die Hütte gerade

Heute morgen ging alles zumindest ab 6 Uhr wieder (aus dem Änderungslog Wiki).

Das muffelt alles irgendwie nach Serverumzug oder einer ähnlichen tiefgreifenden Änderung am System oder an der Infrastruktur. Der nachts noch eröffnete Support Call war bis jetzt noch nicht beantwortet.

Ich habe jetzt nochmal meine E-Mails und meine 1&1-Mitteilungen überprüft: Wenn wirklich etwas geplant am System verändert wurde, hat 1&1 schlichtweg vergessen den/m Kunden bescheid zu geben. Wenn es eine ungeplante Aktion (z.B. durch Hardwareausfall) war hätte ich spätestens heute morgen eine E-Mail erwartet.

Dies sind nicht die ersten technischen Probleme mit 1&1, die letzten paar Jahre kam es immer wieder vor dass kleinere Datenmengen (im Bereich von wenigen MB) nicht runter-/hochgeladen werden konnten. Dieser Zustand zog sich dann immer über mehrere Tage.

Da ich auch einen Rootserver (nicht 1&1! Bisschen Werbung darf man machen: Bis jetzt gute Erfahrungen: Hetzner AG) im Zugriff habe, werde ich mittelfristig alle Domains umziehen und den ganzen Kram selber machen – dann weiss ich wenigstens warum irgendwas nicht geht.

Meine Meinung über die letzten Jahre und 1&1 im Privatkundenbereich: Bunte Bildchen und Knöpfchen haben sie genug auf den Support- und Konfigurationsseiten, soviel dass sich kein Mensch mehr auskennt. Ansonsten wirken sie nicht so gross wie sie eigentlich wirklich sind. Mir ist klar dass ich kein Geschäftskunde (und damit uninteressant) bin, aber diese unsaubere Art des Webhostings kann ich auch getrost selber bewerkstelligen.

SPAM filter said “Invalid date in header (wrong GMT/UTC timezone)” to

…which is a very weird timestamp, because last time I checked, the GMT wasn’t 7h away from the UTC.

Next was “Subject: has too many raw illegal characters” to a subject headerline containing unquoted non-ASCII characters. Though this is a minor issue, I see nothing over-complex in the nearly 25 years old specification of how a mail has to look.

The rest of the SPAM scoring was the text layout and the HTML glibberish that is typical for a SPAM mail.

I don’t get why Ebay – a relative big Internet company – sends such mails. Alone the date/timestamp – I hope the administrators of the mail systems don’t touch the critical stuff like PayPal or similar. Alone if you look at those mails – there’s no big optical difference to the SPAM mails offering Viagra&Co.

I’m not that picky about emails and their standards compilance, but at least two of the factors shown above are simply silly and easy to fix – for a big Internet company. I wonder why those mails aren’t touched by the mail-provider’s filters. And no, whitelisting the sender address is not a nice option – spammers also know these addresses, and spammers also will use them.
